Winter in Waterford

In Waterford, we experience all four of the seasons in heightened glory. Through these winter months, nothing has been more exciting than waking up to a blanket of fresh powdery snow. A pot of hot locally roasted coffee (Maine Micro Roasters!), homemade sourdough bread, local eggs & bacon fuel us for the day ahead. Eager to spend a day in the sun & snow, we suit up in wool from head to toe. (Ok those rhymes were completely accidental I swear, come try my tangerine whiskey sour and you might start rhyming off the cuff.)

OK - so we pile into the truck and the already short 24 miles to Sunday River fly by when immersed in invigorating conversation with my siblings on beautiful country backgrounds. With a vast area of peaks and lodges to choose from, even season pass holders, like ourselves, experience a new favorite run everyday. From warming up by an outdoor firepit to carving new trails in powdery glades, we simply can’t get enough days on the mountain. Our family actually stumbled upon this Inne after our first visit to Sunday River exactly one year ago this week. Tune in to the next newsletter for the full story!

Other nearby alpine resorts we can’t wait to check out include: Shawnee Peak & Mount Abram.

Our Norwegian family heritage might have led you to guess we are also avid cross country skiers. We still use our grandmother's traditional sixty year old wooden skis, with an overwhelming amount of wax options to go with them. Our annual trips to the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont are still something to look forward to, but we have so enjoyed exploring local XC trails, as well as beginning the process of carving our own trails on 17 acres of woodland property. (Feel free to suggest names for any soon-to-be trails!)

For any visiting or local cross country skiers, Carters has been a favorite for generations. Check out their new location in Bethel with 30km of trails, or visit their old location in Oxford, now home to Oxbow Beer Garden! Where you can enjoy a fresh pour of craft beer & pizza, with or without skiing. The best beer & pizza in the state mind you, feel free to quote me on that.

From some of Maine’s best alpine ski resorts, to local XC trails, ice fishing, snowshoe hikes, or trekking on a snowmobile, any outdoor enthusiast will find a reason to enjoy the snow!

If you're not into outdoor sports, catch up on reading by the woodstove or huddle around a puzzle. The Waterford Puzzle company hand cuts custom wooden puzzles! One of our guests graciously hand cut a puzzle for us, of a picture she drew of the Inne during her stay last summer! (Thanks Shay!)

All in all, we have so enjoyed our first winter here at The Waterford Inne, particularly those days when we got out into the snow and away from sanding, painting, wallpapering and pulling up carpet! Renovating was fun too though don’t get me wrong!

Spring is just around the corner, and as the snow begins to melt I am dreaming of seeding vegetables to put in a warm earth, soon enough……

See you in the spring, see you in the summer, see you next ski season!

(By then you can stop by for Apres ski afterwards!)

Thanks for tuning in!

…. & Stay tuned for what’s on the docket!

With love & gratitude,

Kember
