sunday concert series: mirah & footings

CONCERT SERIES

Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn lives in Brooklyn, New York, where she works as a songwriter, performer, producer and mom.  In a constant dedication to expanding her tender repertoire of American folk songs into a larger context, her recordings seek to find the magical amity between explorative percussion, orchestral sounds and elements of rock and popular music.

Since starting out in the late 1990’s, she has released over a dozen solo and collaborative recordings on various independent labels including K Records, Kill Rock Stars, Absolute Magnitude Recordings, Double Double Whammy and 7e.p., and toured solo and with countless iterations of her own band in concert halls, music clubs and punk basements all across North America, Japan and Europe.

Mirah has dedicated her creative process to investigating the complicated intersections within communities large and small, believing that with deeper understanding of each other, the seeds of a more generous and less violent world are planted.

“Mirah propels her magical, three-dimensional spaces with her clear beacon of a voice and instrumentation that slips from whisper-in-your-ear intimacy to rushing, tumbling aural avalanches.”   -New York Press

Footings releases ruminative, resilient The Worm Moon

Fifth full length for the New England folk rock quartet is out August 1st on Feeding Tube and Don’t Live Like Me Records

“How can we move forward when we’re going nowhere?” asks Eric Gagne in the opening lines of The Worm Moon, his fifth full-length as Footings. The album takes its name from the March full moon, which signals the first stirrings of life, kicking off an annual process of rebirth and regeneration that shoots up through the cracks in winter’s desolation to bring growth and hope. The Worm Moon marks the beginnings of a slow process, full of fits and starts and reversals, where it’s not always obvious that conditions are improving. In that way, it’s an apt metaphor for the struggle that shaped the folk rock band’s latest album, out August 1 on Feeding Tube and Don’t Live Like Me Records.

“I’ve always liked the idea of the worm moon,” said Gagne. “It means that even when things seem stagnant, we’re always growing. To me, that’s the only real constant. We should always be reevaluating ourselves and understanding how we're interacting with the world.”

Like its namesake, the album came out of a long, desolate period, where world events like COVID and personal issues like the end of a marriage and the loss of a parent cast a pall over any attempts at creativity. But like a northern New England spring, the songs came anyway and on their own schedule. Gagne recorded the bulk of it with Ben Rogers at Loud Sun Studios in Southern New England. Later, an additional, all-out rocking session with Charlie Chronopoulos at the Glass Factory in Wilton, NH, produced the album’s closing track “I Won’t Go.” Charlie Chronopoulos mixed the album, and Will Killingsworth at Dead Air mastered it.

The songs on the album build lush but sparing textures out of acoustic instruments, primarily guitar, bass and drums, drawing on a slightly configured band, which can range, in live performance, from a solo act to a quartet. As before, Rick Rude’s Jordan Holtz plays bass, and Candace Clement of Western Mass legends Bunny’s a Swine sings and plays guitar and keyboard alongside Gagne. However, there’s a new drummer in Mia Govoni, a Berklee grad with impressive chops. And though long-time Footings violist Elisabeth Fuchsia (Bonnie Prince Billy, Ryan Davis Band) still layers Gagne’s songs with keening, swooning strings on several of Worm Moon’s tracks, she has moved out of the area and is no longer a member of the band.

These bandmates have become an integral part of Gagne’s writing process. “The nice thing about Mia and Jordan and Candace is that I can play them a song and I know that by the time all three of them are done, the song is going to be a million times better,” he says.

Gagne started his musical career in the experimental instrumental band Death to Tyrants in 2003, touring on an alternative circuit of town halls and basements alongside New England hardcore icons like Ampere. Then in 2008, he launched the quieter, folkier Redwing Blackbird with fellow guitarist Austin Wright, playing the same DIY circuit as Death to Tyrants only unplugged; the band recorded three-full length albums between 2010 and 2013 when Wright left the band. Gagne then played briefly with a solo project called Passerine and started Footings with Candace Clement and Elisabeth Fuschia in 2012.

Since then, Footings has made five albums, toured with Marisa Anderson and played as Bonnie Prince Billy’s back-up band in 2022. Celebrated tastemaker Byron Coley once wrote, “Gagne’s songs and deep vocals, often the core of the band’s operation, combine the literary qualities of a heavy reader with the observational data of a poet.”

Gagne is also a mainstay of the underground music scene in Northern New England, booking a diverse and adventurous bill of artists at Keene, NH-based Nova Arts and curating the excellent Thing in the Spring Festival in Peterborough and Keene for the last 27 years, most recently with Stephen Malkmus and Califone headlining.

sunday concert series: the wooden nickels

CONCERT SERIES

Wooden Nickels is a dynamic old-time trio steeped in the rich musical traditions of Appalachia and Ireland. Laura Feddersen (fiddle), Joel Wennerstrom (banjo), and Owen Marshall (guitar) play with tight rhythm, strong melodies, and a deep connection to traditional roots. With driving banjo, rhythmically rich fiddling, and expressive, melodic guitar work, their sound brims with energy, grit, and the unmistakable joy of playing together.

Joel Wennerstrom
Joel plays clawhammer banjo and guitar for contra and square dances in the New England area. Before moving to Boston in 2013, Joel lived in NYC, where he taught design and drawing at Pratt Institute. His playing is featured on various recordings, including Hammer & String’s “The Girl Who Broke My Heart” with Rhys Jones and Cleek Shrey, “Jumping Through Hoops” with Kristin Andreassen, Chris Eldridge and Paul Kowert, “The Pleasure of Your Company” with Harry Bolick, “All in Good Time”, with Alan Kaufman and Don Stratton, and “A Fiddler’s Sojourn” with Jeff Trippe.

Laura Feddersen
Laura grew up in a musical family in Bloomington, Indiana. After spending many a night sleeping in the bass case at dances and music parties, at the age of five she took up the fiddle herself, playing for the ceili and square dances in her hometown. Laura has since traveled extensively playing and teaching fiddle, and is well known for her unique and skillful take on Irish, American, and Irish-American traditional music. She now resides in Boston, where she has most recently recorded and performed with the projects "Ship in the Clouds", the Virtual Behan Sessions, and “Brightly or Darkly” with fiddler Nathan Gourley.

Owen Marshall

Vogue once called Owen Marshall “a guitar/mandolin/banjo player rivaled in character only by the occasional three-pronged carrot” (Vogue, 2009). A multi-instrumentalist and highly regarded accompanist in the traditional music world, Owen is known for his fluid bouzouki work and compelling guitar style. Over the past 20 years, he has toured and recorded with artists such as the Seamus Egan Project, Liz Carroll, Copley Street, Dervish, Riptide, The Press Gang, Jenna Moynihan, Haas/Marshall/Walsh, Pine Tree Flyers, A Christmas Celtic Sojourn, and has been involved on over 30 albums.

sunday concert series: lisa/liza, glenn jones, liam grant

CONCERT SERIES

Glenn Jones:

“Though he'd never admit it himself, Glenn Jones might singlehandedly be the most important guitarist of the last several decades. His life long tenure to the underground has gifted us, dear reader, with 10 widely acclaimed solo LPs on top of an already emphatic career alongside the genre defying Cul De Sac - a band that you forgot played more times with Damo Suzuki than Can did.

Jones’ subtle approach to fingerstyle remains uniquely idiosyncratic, having established and continued to innovate a deeply personal melodic grammar for the acoustic guitar and banjo that is witty, cleverly self-referential and tethered to the weight of reflection and memory.

Sketches of Fahey, a close friendship with the late John Jackson of Fairfax Virginia, long conversations in the driveway with one Jack Rose; devotion to his mother, the ever lovely Nora Smith with her leather jacket, and his cats. The portraiture of days gone by, sentiment for those close and fondly remembered. Ever fleeting. Ever sublime.

Here is a vital messenger of the steel string guitar who we can celebrate in his time - here and now.”

— Man Tragil, 2025.

Lisa / Liza:

Lisa/Liza is the songwriting project of Portland singer and guitarist Liza Victoria. Throughout her catalogue of songs, she affirms the value of music and songwriting in her life, providing comfort through illness and isolation and helping to hold onto cherished memories through the poetry she sings. Meditations on joy, pain, human relationships and the natural world that stretch out slowly like long shadows.

"Over about a decade of work Lisa / Liza has carved out a genre defining soundscape and as a project has taken on a transmutative personality shifting between a purely solo endeavor and a full fledged band. She embraces sparse melody, introspective lyricism, at times almost entire feedback fed instrumentals, and in fashion to her self reliant state she represents a serious dedication to DIY."

https://orindal.limitedrun.com/artists/lisaliza

Liam Grant:

Liam Grant is a New England guitarist with a punk ethos, cut from the American Primitive cloth. The restless guitar explorations, modal epics, and driving uptempo rags recall the likes of Grant's pedagogue, Takoma Records, and the path that was paved by his forebears John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Peter Walker, Max Ochs and later Glenn Jones, Steffen Basho-Junghans, Jack Rose, and others.

Bridging that past Grant evokes the pith of the landscape where he was raised. Instrumental memoirs and ruminations on the banks of the Merrimack River. Amoskeag. And the place where the waters flow around it. Salmon tails up the falls and black pearls from the river. The exodus to Stratton-Eustis and the last night on Dead River before the great flood.

FORAGE & FEAST

FORAGE

& FEAST

learn how to forage wild edibles from our surroundings…

and indulge in a thoughtful multi-course meal composed from the bounty from our forests and landscape.

An informative foraging expedition and wild - edible feast in our barn.

Join Rachel Alexandrou, a seasoned forager and wild food cook, for a stroll through our fields and woods, to learn the art of safely identifying and preparing wild edible plants. In June, there is a bounty of edible flowers and greens waiting to be discovered. The walk will last 1.5 hours and conclude with Q&A, and Rachel will bring a selection of her favorite foraging books. Bring a notebook, writing utensil, sturdy shoes, a water bottle, and bug spray. Whether you're a novice forager or a plant enthusiast eager to enhance your culinary skills, all are welcome. As a delightful conclusion, Rachel will treat you to a wild foraged soda. The adventure continues with foraged cocktails before settling down for a thoughtful multi-course foraging based menu at Tallulah’s, via chef Brandon Montes.

Rachel Alexandrou, an artist and forager, combines her background in plant science with a collaborative approach to craft immersive experiences centered around food, flora, and reshaping our connection to the natural world. With a B.S. in Environmental Horticulture and a 400-hour certificate in community herbalism from the Northeast School of Botanical Medicine, Rachel brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to each adventure.

Brandon Montes is shining a spotlight on the bounty of our gardens, surrounding organic farms throughout the year. Along with a strong focus on indigenous ingredients, sustainable wild foods, and invasive species coming from both the oceans and deep woods of Maine. The cuisine will be a clear representation of our land and surrounding regions. Fermentation, preservation, investigation, and longevity through community are what deeply roots the food systems he will create for seasons to come.

This collaboration is one that will speak on our shared love of maine’s wild edible that surrounds us, and in our short season, is ever fleeting. Come experience the magic of capturing and exploring the flavors of our woods.

SUNDAY JUNE 30th

3:00-5:00 : Plant walk with Rachel, ends with sipping on her wild plant soda.

5:00-6:00 : Cocktail hour at Tallulah’s ~ sip on cocktails and mocktails featuring the wild edibles you have learned about ~

6:00-8:00 : Enjoy a multi-course meal in our barn, by chef Brandon Montes, a continued exploration of the wild edibles of maine
