season of planning

and soon, planting

first seeds

Just last week I was climbing up a mountain in Vermont with my grandmothers 60-year old wooden skis strapped to my toes. This week the sun is shining, somehow these days feel brighter than even the depth of summer can offer by memory. The reflective snow is a truly a blinding sight. (good thing i’m spared by my dorky transition glasses) Today I help my neighbor and friend, farmer Hannah of Wandering Root Farm, seed her FIRST TRAYS of the season! Spinach! Onions! Lettuce! Oh my!

It was a welcome break from my own back-aching work of excel spreadsheets. (I swear I’d rather be moving furniture or soil or dough than sitting still in a chair) Tasks included taking a full seed inventory, making a list of new crops to add to the roster, and beginning the rather meticulous process of planning out each bed for the season.

And I don’t mean to offer any sense of complaint, I am straight GIDDY with excitement as I flip through seed catalogs for new suspects, and am reminded of varieties I have already acquired along the way.

just about a month till spring, can you believe it?

greenhouse for our seedlings on our farm!

a place of growth

You may have seen, this fall we built the propagation house of our dreams. A place where seeds will be sown and nurtured until they meet their fate of dutiful rows in the field, to be further tended until they make it to your plate, or in your cup!

Michael Ruscito is a designer, guitar luthier, furniture maker, farmer, carpenter, and all around creative. You might remember that he helped us design and build our new sign out front too, after a long process of coming up with a rebrand for the logo. Mike and I spent many coffee-fueled hours perfecting the design details of the greenhouse, and scavenging for discarded windows, bonus points if we could find stained glass! Upon completion, its beauty was beyond what even a digital-design-sketch software could being to emulate. I am beyond lucky to have him involved with a whole variety of various things, from graphic design to building and general all- around - support. Biggest possible of THANK YOUs to Mike.

Next up, the construction of some tables, a workbench and away we go! Thanks again HANNAH for some of your extra materials! Supporting and encouraging each other’s small-bizz, collaborating, collective dreaming and commiserating is sense of  community I have always longed for.

it takes a village.

more planning

Other than counting our radish seeds and sq feet of newly opened soil to utilize, we are busy busy bees planning the season ahead!

…a return of our usual farm to table barn dinners on fridays and saturdays, you bet, and better than ever! (more on that later…!)

But we have more up our sleeves! Our mission is to support and gather the local community of western maine, and beyond. Some of the ideas we are sketching out:

Workshops: from foraging, and herbalism, or other creative crafts

Yoga: classes open to the public, in our barn our outside

Markets: Local artists, makers, bakers, artisans, creatives, vintage! along with our bar open for drinks and a snack!

Live Music: Local musicians, same quality of food, but more casual bar menu!

We will also be booking very select weddings and private events, get in touch if your interested by emailing stay@thewaterfordinne.com
